Impedance Audiometry
Impedance Audiometry
The Impedance Audiometry Test is an advanced, objective hearing assessment used to evaluate the middle ear function, eardrum mobility, ear pressure, and acoustic reflex pathways. Unlike routine hearing tests that check what sounds you can hear, this test measures how well the eardrum and middle ear bones respond to changes in air pressure and sound stimulation. It is highly effective for diagnosing middle ear infections, fluid behind the eardrum, Eustachian tube dysfunction, otosclerosis, and conductive hearing loss.
At our audiology and hearing care center, impedance audiometry is performed using advanced tympanometry and acoustic reflex equipment by experienced audiologists. The test is especially useful for children with repeated ear infections, patients with blocked ears, ear pain, or unexplained hearing difficulty.
How the Impedance Audiometry Test Works
During the procedure, a small soft probe is gently placed into the ear canal to create an airtight seal. The machine changes the air pressure inside the ear canal and sends a soft tone to measure:
- Tympanometry – movement of the eardrum
- Middle Ear Pressure – pressure balance inside the ear
- Acoustic Reflex – response of middle ear muscles to loud sounds
The results are displayed as a tympanogram graph, which helps specialists identify normal ear function or conditions like fluid, negative pressure, or stiffness in the middle ear. The test is safe, painless, non-invasive, and usually completed in 5–10 minutes.
