How the Test Works
During the procedure, the patient is asked to:
- Stand straight with feet together
- Keep the arms by the side or crossed
- First stand with eyes open
- Then close the eyes for 30–60 seconds
The specialist carefully observes for body sway, foot movement, or loss of balance. A patient who remains stable with eyes open but becomes unstable with eyes closed may have a positive Romberg sign, suggesting proprioceptive or vestibular dysfunction. The test is safe, quick, painless, and usually completed in 5 minutes.
